The Great Westboro Garage Sale

21 05 2009

When: Saturday June 6, 2009 between 9:00 and 2:00 p.m.
Where: outdoors at the Dovercourt Recreation Centre

Here’s what you need to know:

  • A limited number of tables are available to rent at $10/each
  • Scout out the best location on Dovercourt’s handy-dandy map of the park and book your spot at the Dovercourt client services desk. You can also call Dovercourt to book a table at 613-798-8950.
  • Tables are first-come-first-served and will be assigned a location at the time of rental.
  • The WCA is also accepting donations of garage sale goods, but let us know beforehand if you plan to do so!
  • We’re looking for some volunteers to help set up tables the morning of the sale.

Wondering what to sell? Start with those boxes in the basement. :)

There will be no shortage of people!

Also planned for that day: BBQ, Music in the Park, a bouncy castle, classic cars, and more. Habitat for Humanity will be on hand selling tickets for the annual Habitat for Humanity playhouse raffle, so drop by and check it out. (The value of the play house is approximately $3500. Tickets are 10 dollars and the draw will take place on June 30, 2009.)

Please spread the word! The proceeds of the sale will help support our projects in the coming year, including the rejuvenation of Clare Gardens Park.  Thank you for your support!

Hi there,
I’m curious to know why the community garage sale isn’t taking place during WestFest weekend when the streets will be filled with people? Also, why does the community garage sale have to be centralized at Dovercourt C.C.? I have a lot of items for a garage sale, but don’t plan on taking 5 trips to set up a table at Dovercourt. Could the Westboro neighbourhood sale not be run like the Great Glebe Garage Sale (maybe name it the Wild, Wild Westboro sale?) Participants could commit to giving 10% of their profits to the Dovercourt community centre or Habitat for Humanity? Something to think about for 2010!

Sally – Anything is possible when we have volunteers come forward from the Westboro community. Ultimately it would be great to see this grow into a Glebe-style event but we are walking before we run. Would you be willing to help us out on this next year?

In my experience Westfest isn’t a time when people really want to shop. And we went with a date that coincided with Music in the Park to take advantage of a large crowd that will already be there. We’re building on that by providing a couple of other things to draw people in. (You usually can’t get those kinds of crowds by pitching a table at the end of your driveway, especially if you’re a quiet road that doesn’t get a lot of traffic.)

For what it’s worth, last year there was a mini garage sale at Dovercourt park and it was pretty easy to drive my stuff up there and unload it at our table.

We are really counting on the community’s support here. We’re hoping this will become an annual event which will help support our projects in the coming year including the rejuvenation of Clare Gardens Park…. which I know is much loved by many local families.

I say just join in. No invitation required. It’s a great time to have your lawn (or driveway) sale as well as people will be in the neighbourhood. I like the idea of a charity run event at dovercourt and fun for the kids in a central location. If you want to put your proceeds to your own charity or send Dovercourt a $10 donation to thank them for the free advertising than good on you. Saves you lugging your stuff to the centre and it’s a win – win situation.
