The Great Westboro Garage Sale

May 21, 2009

When: Saturday June 6, 2009 between 9:00 and 2:00 p.m.
Where: outdoors at the Dovercourt Recreation Centre

Here’s what you need to know:

  • A limited number of tables are available to rent at $10/each
  • Scout out the best location on Dovercourt’s handy-dandy map of the park and book your spot at the Dovercourt client services desk. You can also call Dovercourt to book a table at 613-798-8950.
  • Tables are first-come-first-served and will be assigned a location at the time of rental.
  • The WCA is also accepting donations of garage sale goods, but let us know beforehand if you plan to do so!
  • We’re looking for some volunteers to help set up tables the morning of the sale.

Wondering what to sell? Start with those boxes in the basement. :)

There will be no shortage of people!

Also planned for that day: BBQ, Music in the Park, a bouncy castle, classic cars, and more. Habitat for Humanity will be on hand selling tickets for the annual Habitat for Humanity playhouse raffle, so drop by and check it out. (The value of the play house is approximately $3500. Tickets are 10 dollars and the draw will take place on June 30, 2009.)

Please spread the word! The proceeds of the sale will help support our projects in the coming year, including the rejuvenation of Clare Gardens Park.  Thank you for your support!

Transit changes in Westboro

May 21, 2009

“Schedule and route changes to Ottawa’s transit system won the approval of city council’s transit committee on Wednesday, despite reservations from some councillors.”

Westboro resident Ian Thomson said people in his neighbourhood were “shocked and angered” by what they viewed as radical changes to the system after the disastrous winter strike.

Read the full story at the Ottawa Citizen website.

We’d love to hear what you think. Will the proposed changes help or hinder transit in Westboro?

Second public consultation re: Clare Park

May 18, 2009

The WCA is ready to facilitate a second meeting with the community in regards to Clare Gardens Park. As many of you already know, the City of Ottawa has set aside funds for a new play structure. This is a really critical stage for us because (a) we will be showing park plans (b) we need to hear your feedback and (c) we’re looking for a few dedicated folks to take on fund-raising duties for the extra components the budget won’t cover.

When: Wednesday May 27, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Mothercraft Ottawa, 475 Evered Ave.

Please let us know if you’re planning to attend so we can get an idea of numbers. Thank you!

meeting re: Transportation Master Plan

May 14, 2009

This came in from Councillor Christine Leadman:

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to a meeting to discuss the future of the Transportation Master Plan. As your councillor and as a resident, I feel it is necessary for the community to discuss the effects the plan will have on Kitchissippi Ward.

There are two components of this plan which are of particular interest to our community:

1. The impact of the western transfer station that is scheduled for Tunney’s Pasture as part of the downtown transit tunnel. This first project of the transit plan will introduce significant transfers and rerouting of buses. City staff is finalizing the implementation methods and public input in the process will be crucial in minimizing impacts.

2. The terms of reference for the Western Corridor Environmental Assessment will be brought forward to Committee and Council soon. During this process public participation on the preferred route will be critical to its selection. It is important that full information be available to all affected residents so that our community can comment effectively on their preferred route. The option is the Ottawa River Parkway, with the Byron Linear Park and Carling Avenue being scoped.

Have your say on this critical change and the effect this will have on your community, family and quality of life.

WHAT: Councillor’s Transportation Master Plan consultation
WHEN: May 26,2009 from 7 to 9 p.m.
WHERE: Hintonburg Community Centre,1064 Wellington St.

I will be on-hand to provide information, hear your concerns and express my own regarding this plan. If you have any questions, please contact my office at 613-580-2485 or

Great Westboro Garage Sale

May 11, 2009

… is coming on Saturday June 6th 2009, and Dovercourt will be ground zero!

Residents will be able to rent a table and sell their wares, so start cleaning out your basements. Think of the possibilities! You can sell:

  • baby clothes and toys
  • garden equipment you no longer use
  • appliances that are taking up valuable real estate in your cupboards
  • perennials
  • your art, jewelery, art supplies and canvases that never got used
  • baked goods
  • books
  • all kinds of goods, old and new

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

Also planned for that day: Music in the Park, a bouncy castle, classic cars, and more.

Come to sell, come to shop, stay for lunch, meet your neighbors!

Proceeds of the Westboro Garage sale will be going to the WCA. One of our biggest projects right now is the rejuvenation of Clare Gardens Park. Your support is more than welcome.

In the meantime, we’re working with Dovercourt who is helping with table rental. Soon you’ll be able to go online to book your spot. Stay tuned!

A cycling summit

May 11, 2009

This just came in from the MP’s office:

-

Paul Dewar will be hosting a consultation with community groups and residents in Ottawa-Centre on their ideas for improving cycling in Ottawa.

The purpose of the event is to gain insight from the public on their ideas and priorities around cycling in Ottawa so Paul can bring those ideas to the House of Commons. We’ll hear from a few key people on where things are at and where they could be, then brainstorm together as to where we need to go and how!

When: Saturday May 30, 2009, 10 am to 2 pm
Where: St. Giles Church, in the Glebe (north east corner of Bank St. & First Ave.). Enter Door on First Avenue.

Why: Cycling offers enormous benefits for the community. It helps protect the environment, it improves health, and requires modest investments in infrastructure. It can also help address traffic congestion, and is a more inexpensive and much safer mode of transportation.

Building, maintaining and promoting better bicycle infrastructure in Ottawa would go a long way in encouraging a healthy life-style, at a time when people want to cut back on their greenhouse gas emissions and save money on their fuel costs. We need to help make it easier for people to get out of their cars and walk or bike.

It would also improve tourism in our city, helping Ottawa’s reputation as a cycling destination.
