The season of the sale

May 29, 2008

 … garage sale, that is.

Our neighbors in Hintonburg are hosting a community garage sale on Saturday May 31. If you’re the sort of person who enjoys the “thrill of the find” you might want to consider swinging by.

We’ve received a number of emails asking if Westboro could play host to the same kind of event. (There used to be one outside Dovercourt a few years back, but it’s gone the way of the dodo.)

What do you think? Is there enough interest to revisit the idea of a community garage sale here in Westboro? Any volunteers who’d like to take it on as their own? Let us know in the comments of this post.

The final word from the OMB re: 300 Richmond Road

May 28, 2008

This is an update to this post regarding the future of the former used car lot at 300 Richmond Road (at Eden).

The OMB has finally handed down its decision. To summarize: We lost the appeal and will be discussing our options at our upcoming board meeting. We will be posting a more detailed response here soon.

Click here to read the full text of the OMB decision in PDF format. If you haven’t been aware of this issue, know that this decision is of critical importance to the future of Westboro Village.

WCA on TV? Maybe.

May 16, 2008

The WCA is participating in a taping of Road Grill at Westboro Kiwanis Park (a.k.a. Dovercourt park) on Sunday.

Road Grill is a locally-produced BBQ show, and stars legendary CFL quarterback and sports commentator Matt Dunigan.

The show travels around the country to different events, such as Ultimate tournaments and skydiving jamborees, with real people joining Matt on camera and enjoying his BBQ recipes. The premise of this episode is the “community garage sale,” and we’ll have our own table.

We will be arriving between 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. to unload our items and set up. The film crew will begin shooting the opening for our show at 9:00 a.m.

Stop by and say hello! Or catch us on the Food Network afterwards. :)

City must save green space

May 13, 2008

“They’re at it again, nibbling at one of the few remaining pieces of inner city green space that has survived decades of municipal greed.

The latest, which has been tasted before, is a field off the Richmond Road in Westboro next to what used to be called the Rochester House, a handsome edifice now being used by a steakhouse chain, opposite the northern entrance to Broadview Avenue.

Rochester Field is one of the few remaining small open spaces, unimpeded by the paraphernalia of swing sets, seesaws and sandboxes which decorate most urban parks, that are left in the city’s west end….”

Are you familiar with Rochester Field? Do you use it? Is saving green space in Westboro important to you, or not?

NCC in Kitchissippi

May 12, 2008

Back in February, several representatives of local community associations met with MP Paul Dewar to discuss what was happening with the NCC in light of the Community Design Plan (CDP) (passed by Ottawa City Council on July 9, 2007). Mr. Dewar wrote to the NCC and today, May 12th,  we received a reply which we have uploaded for everyone to read.

Great job!

May 12, 2008

A big thank you to everyone who came out to help clean up Clare Garden Park on Saturday morning. It’s good to know there are so many caring people in our community.

Not only did you work magic with your rakes and shovels, but you also gave us some great ideas about how we can improve this lovely park. Some of these included:

  • fixing and widening the path (wouldn’t it be nice if two people could walk with strollers or ride their bikes side by side?)
  • updating the play structure
  • repairing the snow fence on the Athlone side of the park
  • replacing the signage along Clare Ave.
  • moving the swings to create a larger playing field
  • installing more benches to create a more social environment

Thanks again for your support and your participation! We really enjoyed meeting you all.

More will be posted on this topic soon.

Sincerely,

andrea and Irmi

Website to close info gap between Ottawa developers, residents

May 10, 2008

It’s about time!

“Ottawa residents looking for more information about a development planned for their neighbourhood will soon have access to a database of all development documents submitted to the city.

The database will contain site plans, traffic studies and environmental assessments that had been hard to obtain until now. They will be accessible through the City of Ottawa website starting Tuesday…”
